Book of Screams & Transcreation

I’ve just heard this beautiful and stimulating poem and I thought I would share it with you all. Book of Screams is performed first by the poet Afeif Ismail Abdelrazig in Arabic, then in English by Vivienne Glance.

Due to a couple of projects I’ve been working on recently, I’ve been thinking about the creative processes of adaptation and translation. Abdelrazig and Glance work together in a process called “transcreation” and the presenter of the podcast speaks a little about that after the poem itself. The “transcreation” is not literal translation but a recreation of the poem in English which is developed through a collaboration of both poets.

If you’re interested in find out a little more about transcreation, a useful start-point may be Matthew Stibbe’s discussion of its use in marketing.

I’m on the look out for all kinds of literary/performance adaptations, translations, transcreations and/or tradaptations at the moment. If you’ve enjoyed or found one particularly interesting, I’d love to hear about it! You can leave me a comment below or use any of the links in the contact panel (left).
